Empowering Single Mothers:

The Heartwarming Journey of Camp Cucumber

In 1990, Diane McQuaig embarked on a mission that would touch the lives of countless single mothers and their families. What started as a Christmas Dinner for 250 guests from struggling single-mom families in the Jane Finch Community soon blossomed into something extraordinary. Over the next 25 years, Diane and her team extended their warmth and generosity to host approximately 5000 guests annually, offering not just a meal, but a memorable experience filled with laughter, joy, and a sense of community.

As the years passed and the bonds between Camp Cucumber and the families it served grew stronger, Diane envisioned something even more impactful—a chance to provide these families with a respite from their daily struggles, a moment to breathe, learn, and connect in the heart of Canada’s serene wilderness.

Thus, Camp Cucumber was born—a week-long retreat nestled in the beauty of the northern countryside, offering a plethora of activities tailored to both mothers and children. From thrilling adventures like climbing high ropes and archery to serene moments by the lake, the camp aimed to provide a holistic Canadian camping experience.

But Camp Cucumber was more than just a getaway. It was a sanctuary where mothers could participate in workshops tailored to their needs, equipping them with valuable skills and knowledge to navigate life’s challenges. Meanwhile, children had the opportunity to engage in skill-building activities, fostering personal growth and confidence in a supportive environment.

Each year, a new theme brought fresh excitement and anticipation, whether it was a whimsical “Dr. Seuss” theme complete with costumes and a captivating show or another creative endeavor that sparked imagination and laughter.

Now celebrating its 33rd year, Camp Cucumber stands as a beacon of hope and resilience, having welcomed approximately 1800 mothers and children through its gates. The ripple effects of its impact are felt far and wide, with families traveling from across the Greater Toronto Area to partake in the magic of Camp Cucumber.

Yet, amidst the celebrations and shared memories, Diane and her team face significant challenges. The costs associated with running the camp have soared, from rental fees to essential supplies for families in need. Despite their unwavering dedication, Camp Cucumber operates as a small but mighty registered charity, devoid of government or corporate support. As the economic climate remains uncertain, fundraising becomes an increasingly uphill battle.

But through it all, Diane remains resolute in her commitment to supporting single mothers and their families. Camp Cucumber is not just a camp—it’s a lifeline, a testament to the power of community and compassion.

As we reflect on Camp Cucumber’s remarkable journey, let us remember the profound impact of simple acts of kindness and the transformative power of coming together to uplift those in need. Together, we can ensure that Camp Cucumber continues to thrive, offering hope and opportunity to generations of families yet to come. Join us in supporting this invaluable cause and be a part of something truly special. Together, we can make a difference.
